I love youtube…! Youtube is my teacher.

Recently, I immersed into some woodworking tutorials and got caught by a way of joining wood which I had not known existed. It looks so easy – and now that I know about it, I wonder why I had not known about. I struggled with dowels all the time. But now, let me introduce you to pocket holes… Just drill a hole in one of the boards, in a certain position and angle, using a specific drill bit, then drive in a screw – and you’re done. Yes, yes, that really sounds simple, but as always with innovation – it looks so obvious AFTER you had the idea.

I hate to advertise, but if you search in youtube for “Kreg Jig” and “pocket holes”, you will find dozens of good examples on how to do it and which tools to use.

And now it’s time to show you my first completed project, all done with hand tools (except the drilling), sawing the miter at an angle and all. This picture frame replaces the one I bought from Ikea some time back and which went totally out of shape after a while. What do you think?

At the back side, you can see the pocket holes (what looks like a pair of rabbit ears are two parallel holes drilled at an angle into the flat side of the board, so that the screw will go through the narrow side of one board into the narrow side of the neighboring board – so no rabbits, not even one to be seen here).  Isn’t that cute? I love it.
