I will move house soon and started to declutter my basement storage etc. When I came across my old skis which had been resting down there for ten years, I decided heavy-hearted to part with them. I employed my usual way of giving things to others whom I don’t know – I put them outside my house to let people take them if they wanted. Normally, it takes less than an hour and the objects I place there are gone.
This time, however, it took a little longer. Maybe this is due to the fact that spring is the wrong reason to donate winter gear, but anyway it was worth a try. After one day and a half, it had happened – but in a way I had not been expecting. My ski poles were gone. My cross-country skis were gone. And then – ONE of the alpine skis was gone as well, with the other one remaining in its place alone.
My imagination is quite big, but this riddle leads me to a mental block: Who would need one ski? The obvious solution would be a one-legged skier, but I think this is far fetched. Other than that…? I have no clue.
Anyway, the lonely ski of the Rossignol brand (which in German means nightingale as well as – funnily enough – slow seller / shelf warmer) made me think of whether it would be worth a short story of some kind. I will let that sit in my head for a while and see what happens.
Meanwhile: Let’s think of the one-legged skier who is looking forward to the next winter when he can ride the donated twin of the lonely nightingale.
