Here we go, finally a eulogy to the beauty of France’s nature, which is lovely to see, to feel and be part of.
Rivers deep…
Do a hike through the gorge du Verdon, including a true via ferrata-style ascent from the bottom of the gorge to the rim which might bring you to your climbing limits – and beyond. Congrats, babe, you made it!
The gorge is said to be the deepest canyon in Europe – not sure if this is true, as there are other places which claim this superlative for themselves. Let’s say, the gorge is very, very deep.
Mountains high…
Not too high to plant a church on top of a rock, which stands out from the area around like a pillar. Notre Dame du Roc is definitely worth the hike up the hill, from town center in Castellane you can make the trip in maybe 30 minutes, some more if it is hot. You will use a pilgrim’s path up there, and you are rewarded by a stunning view on Castellane, making you wonder how this tiny blue band of river could have cut a canyon of this incredible dimensions into the ground. But believe it or not, this is really the Verdon that did it.
