It was ALMOST real. If only the glass panel hadn’t been there… I saw two cuddly little kiwis today; one especially special as it is white. I visited Mt. Bruce Wildlife Center where they run a kiwi conservation and protection program. They have 30 odd couples of kiwi in the bush behind the center and collect the eggs from the burrows to let them hatch in a protected space and feed the chicks until they are strong enough to defend against enemies like cats and dogs and stout (?) on their own. Then they release them into the wild to start the cycle again. This human interference increases the survival rate of the chicks to adulthood from 5 to 65 %.

Some years back, a white kiwi hatched from two brown parents, and is not an albino. That is very rare and never happened in captivity before. They kept the white kiwi chick as their “display” kiwi, jointly with a brown male, hoping that those two will start breeding one day. But I saw them today – this is clearly a woman-dominated relationship. The girl was chasing the boy round and round their cage, so that I really felt sorry for the poor boy. I am very emancipated, but I found the girl really offensive, so I developed protective feelings for the boy. Chick, leave him in peace…!

This is the girl’s bottom, isn’t that funny?
