Uh, well, I just wanted to give a little update on project M., which I have worked on since January.

I completed it today – yeah! -, even though it went very different from what I whished for, and somehow from what I expected. We had incredibly hot weather, much too hot for May, and much hotter than yesterday as well as expected for tomorrow. No complains… I choose against heatstroke and had to some more walking inbetween than initially planned.

So my results:

I did come in late (approximately 40 mins later than I calculated from my half marathon result), but I did not come in last (there were a few poor souls behind me, men as well as women).

I got three blisters on my feet (one from the left sock, the other two explained below).

I am as tired as seldom before.

I have learned to not pour too much water onto my head for cooling so that it runs down the legs into the shoes, soaking everything – this is where I got the blisters from. I learned that heatstroke is worse than sunburn – so go for the sleeveless top (without fussing over it too much before) and better prepare with sunscreen. I also learned to import sunscreen from New Zealand, this stuff is awesome and protects for hours (85% protection).

And I also learned that a true “spring” (March) or “autumn” (October) marathon would probably be a better choice for me as end of May is too close to summer and can turn out as too hot. However, an experienced Ultra runner told me that especially Mainz is unpredictable – either too hot or too cold or too stormy or too rainy – you get the idea.

And I can reconfirm what we all know: Nothing is nicer than having a wonderful friend for support. Many thanks – again – to you, babe!!!

I got the medal – but the engraving service was already closed when I came in… how very insensitive… the slowest runners may probably treasure the memento of the torture the most…
